GAINESVILLE - Plans have been announced for Gainesville's annual observance of the anniversary of the 9/11 terrorists attacks.

In 107 minutes on that fateful day, September 11, 2001, 405 public safety employees died in the line of duty, 343 firefighters and 72 law enforcement officers as terrorists hijacked four airliners - crashing two of them into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City and another into the Pentagon in Washington. The fourth crashed in the Pennsylvania countryside after passengers overpowered the terrorists who had commandeered it.

Next Thursday's observance is dedicated "to their memory, their families and our nation."

It will begin at 9:55 a.m. at the Gainesville Public Safety Complex at Fire Station #1 at 725 Pine Street.

It will be open to the public with parking provided behind the Gainesville Justice Center, directly off of Banks Street.
