Blowouts, close finishes and everything in between... welcome to the first full Friday night of high school football.

A number of area teams came away with big victories during Week 1, while several more suffered setbacks – though nothing that can’t be wiped away with some improvement in the long season to come.

For teams like East Hall, Flowery Branch and West Hall, the season could not have gotten off to a much better start. The Vikings pulled off a last-second, 20-13 comeback at Wesleyan for their first season-opening win in three years.

Meanwhile, Flowery Branch also broke a two-season streak of dropping season-openers, knocking out Chestatee 29-0 in Gainesville, as freshman quarterback Nick Lance came up big in his first start, passing for two scores.

West Hall also got its campaign off to a flier, blanking cross-town rival Johnson, 28-0 in the “Battle of Oakwood.”

Other winners on the night included Commerce -- which overcame four fumbles – Mill Creek – which set three school records – and Jefferson – which is now 2-0. Buford also moved to 2-0 in emphatic fashion, 56-0 over Berkmar, while East Jackson fended off Lakeview to move to 1-1. Rabun County also moved to 1-1 with a 23-14 win over Habersham Central, while Riverside Military is 1-0 after defeating Fellowship Christian. Meanwhile, Stephens County got the Frank Barden era off to a winning start with a 34-7 win over Franklin County. Union County also hammered neighbor Towns County 57-14.

There was another side to the coin, however, as Gainesville opened up with a 39-0 loss at Grayson, while Jackson County was nipped in the dying minutes by Madison County, 27-21. Dawson County, North Forsyth, North Gwinnett, White County and Apalachee will all look to bounce back after suffering defeat.

You can read in-depth game stories, watch game highlights, including coach interviews, and see all of the night’s scores on our Friday Game Night page.
