STATESBORO - A student at Georgia Southern University, who is from Forsyth County, has died as the result of an apparent beating outside of a bar in Statesboro.

Authorities in Bulloch County say 18-year-old Michael Gatto died Thursday afternoon after he was found unconscious outside of Rude Rudy's bar just after 12 a.m. Thursday.

Police said a former bouncer at the bar has been arrested and charged with aggravated assault in the incident. They said charges against Grant James Spencer, 20, could be upgraded.

According to WSAV-TV in Savannah, Rude Rudy's posted the following statement on its Facebook page Thursday night:

"Our deepest sympathies and prayers go out to the Gatto family. At the time of the incident, the employee in question was not working. His employment at Rude Rudy's has since been terminated. Rude Rudy's will continue to do everything possible to assist in the investigation. Due to the gravity of the situation, Rude Rudy's will not make further comments until the investigation is completed. Out of respect for the Gatto family and to further assist authorities in their investigation, Rude Rudy's will be closed for the evening."

The message has since been removed from Facebook.

Gatto graduated in May from South Forsyth High School, according to Forsyth County School System officials.
