Woman jailed, $2M worth of opium seized in Barrow Co.
AUBURN - A woman remains jailed in Barrow County in connection with the seizure of more than 5,500 gram of opium.
Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith said that his office was notified earlier this month about a suspicious package being shipped from Laos to 301 Oak Ridge in Auburn. Investigators coordinated a "controlled delivery."
"We had some undercover officers in the area watching the home," said Smith. "The postal delivery [service] actually delivered the mail on the street...delivered the package to the front door."
The resident of the house, De Yang, a 38-year-old woman, accepted the package, according to Smith and then officers executed a search warrant.
Smith said the opium was packaged in more than 200 individual packets; ;he estimated the street value of the drugs at more than $2.2 million.
Yang remains jailed without bond in the incident.
The estimated street value of the opium was $2.2 million.
