BALDWIN - An Athens man was airlifted and his wife was taken by ambulance after a motorcycle wreck near Baldwin Saturday afternoon.

Trooper 1st Class Stamey of Georgia State Patrol Post 6 in Gainesville investigated the 1:55 p.m. wreck.

Stamey said Sunday that for an unknown reason, 60-year-old William Hammond lost control of his 2009 Kawasaki 1700 cruising bike on U.S. 441 just inside Banks County south of Baldwin.

The motorcycle ran into the median and threw Hammond and 61-year-old Sandra Hammond off.

Stamey said the motorcycle overturned a couple of times.

William Hammond was airlifted from the scene to Atlanta Medical Center.

Sandra Hammond was taken by ambulance to Northeast Georgia Medical Center.
