GAINESVILLE - Work resumed about noon Thursday on repairing a sinkhole on the west side of Gainesville.

Work crews discovered shortly after arriving work work Thursday morning that a larger track hoe would be needed because the one they had on hand couldn't "reach deep enough," according to Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) spokeswoman Teri Pope.

Pope said at the time that a bigger track hoe was en route and was expected to arrive at mid-afternoon but it was on site about noon. She said crews need to be able to "dig wider and deeper" to install trench boxes, which are used to protect workers while they are below ground level.

The sinkhole was discovered Monday in the parking lot of the shopping center at Pearl Nix and John Morrow parkways which is home to Curves, Barry Menswear and other other tenants. At the time, a hole about the size of a basketball had developed in the pavement but a closer look revealed that it appeared to be about 12 feet wide just under the asphalt and about 20 feet deep.

Part of the affected property is on private land and part is on GDOT right-of-way. GDOT issued a timeline for the work on Tuesday. (See earlier story. Link below.)
