GAINESVILLE - Dozens of kids filled the Gainesville square from 11:30 to 3 p.m. today to "take the roof off the club" and kicked off the Blue Door campaign with the Hall County Boys and Girls Clubs.
"All throughout Boys and Girls Clubs on this day, everyone's kicking off the Blue Door Campaign, and that's really to signify getting in to our community, making everyone aware of what Boys and Girls Clubs are all about," said Steve Mickens, Chief Professional Officer for the Hall County Club.
"When you really think about it, 15 million kids go home to empty homes.... that's about one out of four kids," said Mickens. "What we're trying to do is be that safe haven, be that place where kids can come to."
Mickens said the clubs are in it's 60th year this year, and features programs for both children and teens, and has a high school graduation rate of 100 percent.
The "Take the Roof off the Club" kick off event featured activities that related to the club's three initiatives: Academic Success, Healthy Lifestyle and Character and Good Citizenship. Several kids presented a Kung Fu routine - the martial art is offered as an activity at the clubs. Other kids played board games and healthy snacks were available to everyone.
Mayor Danny Dunagan even proclaimed July 31, 2014 as "Great Futures Day" as part of the Blue Door campaign.
The Blue Door campaign, which is also known as the Great Futures Campaign, hopes to "mobilize the community" and "empower today's youth," just in time for back to school.
