DULUTH - A little boy was killed in a one-vehicle crash on I-85 at Boggs Road Wednesday afternoon when his father veered off the highway and into an exit sign.

Gwinnett County police investigators said Juan C. Velasquez-Dominguez, 33, of Norcross, was traveling southbound on the I-85 connector/distributor around 3:50 p.m when his vehicle careened off the interstate and hit the concrete base for the I-85/Boggs Road exit sign.

As a result of the crash, Juan Velazquez, 7, the son of the driver, was critically injured; he died later at Gwinnett Medical Center. Investigators said the boy was unrestrained in the vehicle.

Another child, Sophia Ramos, age 5, also was unrestrained in the vehicle. She suffered non life-threatening injuries.

The other occupants of the vehicle, 10-year-old Nelson Tucas Belloso and
35-year-old Sara Ramos-Martin, also were injured, according to investigators. Belloso, Ramos-Martin and Velasquez-Dominguez were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.

Investigators said Velasquez-Dominguez remains hospitalized. He faces charges of
vehicular homicide 2nd degree, no drivers license, improper lane change/failed to maintain lane, safety restraint/child and reckless conduct.
