By The Associated Press
ATLANTA (AP) -- Unusually cool air helped Gainesville, Atlanta and Macon break records for low temperatures.
The temperature dropped to 59 at Lee Gilmer Memorial Airport in Gainesville Wednesday morning, breaking the old record for the date of 60 which was set in 1969.
National Weather Service forecasters say the low of 60 degrees in Atlanta around 5 a.m. Wednesday broke the previous record of 61 degrees for the date. The previous record low for July 30 in Atlanta was set in 1936.
Macon hit a low of 61 degrees around 5 a.m. Wednesday, breaking a previous record low of 62 degrees for July 30. Macon's previous record low for the date was set in 1920.
Temperatures fell even lower in the north Georgia mountains. A U.S. Forest Service weather station recorded a low of 48 degrees shortly after 5 a.m. in Union County.
