CUMMING - The Forsyth County Sheriff's Deputy who was shot last month during a shootout at the Forsyth County Courthouse was honored with the Georgia Sheriffs' Association's Deputy Sheriff of the Year Award of Valor.

Daniel Rush received the award in front of co-workers and command staff Thursday at the Georgia Sheriffs' Association's annual summer conference at Lake Lanier Islands Resort, according to Forsyth County Deputy Robin Regan.

"The Georgia Sheriff's Association for the entire state of Georgia is the association where all the sheriffs of each county come together for training and other things. They have an award that is the Deputy Sheriff of the Year Award of Valor," said Regan. "They give this award when they want to recognize a deputy who demonstrated and act of conspicuous heroism and bravery in the line of duty."

In early June, Rush was shot in the leg after Dennis Marx drove up to the courthouse and opened fire. Regan says that Forsyth County Sheriff Duane Piper, along with other speakers at the ceremony, credit Rush's actions with helping save lives and avoiding a likely tragedy.

"Sheriff Piper gave Deputy Rush the award and is exceptionally proud of Deputy Rush and everybody that was involved in that incident," said Regan.

Regan said Rush is still recovering, but he is in good spirits.
