Commerce police said they pulled the truck over, and 64-year-old Glenn Ogden immediately pulled out a gun and shot himself to death in front of deputies.
Chief John Gaissert said that wasn't the end of the danger for people in the area.
"When the officer secured the vehicle, they observed what appeared to be a hand grenade in the rear floor board of the pick-up truck," Gaissert said.
"They (officers) secured the vehicle and the area. We evacuated a 300 foot radius," Gaissert added.
The University of Georgia Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team was called in and secured the device.
