Standout GHS athlete, pro golfer Tommy Valentine dies
By Ken Stanford Staff
GAINESVILLE - A Gainesville man who excelled in football, basketball and golf at Gainesville High School and spent ten years on the pro golf tour has died.
Tommy Valentine, 64, of Gainesville and Grosse Point Woods, Mich., lost a long battle with cancer Saturday.
Valentine earned nine varsity letters as an All-State quarterback, point guard and golfer while attending Gainesville High School. After considering a college football career, he chose, instead, to play golf at the University of Georgia, eventually winning the SEC Championship and being named First Team All American (1970-1971).
During his ten years on the PGA tour, Valentine achieved the top 40 earning status. After leaving the tour, he was named Head Pro at the Lochmoor Club in Grosse Point Woods, Mich., from which he retired in 2009.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday at 2:00 at St. Paul United Methodist Church.
