Gainesville man known for organizing WWII veterans' reunions dies

GAINESVILLE - A Gainesville man who for nearly 30 years hosted a reunion of World War II veterans in his hometown has died.
Asa Autry, 95, died Saturday at Northeast Georgia Medical Center.
Autry enlisted in the Georgia National Guard in 1938, mobilized in 1940, and served in the U.S. Army 214th Coast Artillery anti-aircraft during World War II in the Aleutian Islands, Adak and Amchitka.
For 27 years, he hosted the 214th Regimental Reunion in Gainesville, and veterans from all over the country attended.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 2:00 at the First Baptist Church on Green Street.
