Bond denied for Buford couple accused of locking son in basement
LAWRENCEVILLE - A Buford couple charged with child cruelty for keeping their 13-year-old son locked in a room in their basement was denied bond at a magistrate court hearing in Gwinnett County Thursday.
Recardo Wimbush, who was a star football player for Georgia Tech, and his wife Therian admitted to keeping their son locked in the basement, saying he had molested five of his siblings.
The Wimbush's 10 children were placed in state custody after the couple turned themselves in to authorities last month.
According to Atlanta media reports, the boy was not malnourished and he showed no signs of physical abuse. A Gwinnett police detective testified he scraped paint from the walls as punishment.
Both Recardo and Therian Wimbush face charges of first degree child cruelty and false imprisonment. Those charges have been bound over to Gwinnett County Superior Court, according to a report in the Gwinnett Daily Post.
