Durham Sweeps Gwinnett, 5-3

DURHAM – The Durham Bulls (48-41) continued their mastery over the Gwinnett Braves (40-47) with a 5-3 win in the final game of a two-game series on Thursday night at Durham Bulls Athletic Park. With the series sweep, the Bulls have won seven of nine games against the G-Braves this season.

Gwinnett took the lead in the top of the second inning as Phil Gosselin led off with a walk against Durham starter Jeremy Hellickson. Brandon Boggs singled to right and both moved into scoring position on a double steal. Jose Yepez plated Gosselin with a groundout to short for a 1-0 lead.

The lead did not last long as Gwinnett starter Gus Schlosser walked Jeremy Moore to lead off the bottom of the second and allowed a double to Wilson Betemit, putting runners on second and third. A wild pitch by Schlosser scored Moore to tie the game at 1-1. After a walk by Jayson Nix, Ray Olmedo singled to left scoring Betemit for a 2-1 Durham lead. Ali Solis reached on a bunt single to load the bases with none out, and Robbie Price hit into a 4-6-3 double play, pushing Nix across for a 3-1 lead.

In the top of the sixth, the G-Braves edged closer as Todd Cunningham led off with a single and moved to second on an error by Moore. With two outs, Yepez walked and Jose Constanza followed with an infield single allowing Cunningham to score to cut the Bulls lead to 3-2.

But with James Hoyt on the mound in the bottom of the seventh, the Bulls extended the lead. Price singled with one out and moved to third on a double to left by Justin Christian. Mike Fontenot was intentionally walked to load the bases. Mikie Mahtook then singled to left, scoring Price for a 4-2 lead, and Moore followed with a single to right, scoring Christian for a 5-2 lead.

The G-Braves tallied one in the top of the ninth against reliever Josh Lueke as Joey Terdoslavich reached on a throwing error by Price and moved to second on a single by Edward Salcedo. Cunningham plated Terdoslavich from second with a single to right to make it 5-3, but the G-Braves would fail to score any more runs.

Schlosser (L, 4-4) went 6.0 innings with seven hits, three earned runs, four walks and three strikeouts. Hoyt worked 1.0 inning with four hits, two earned runs, one walk and two strikeouts. Juan Jamie pitched 1.0 inning with one walk.

Hellickson (W, 1-4) went 5.2 innings with seven hits, two earned runs, two walks and four strikeouts. Merrill Kelly went 0.2 of an inning with two hits, one walk and one strikeout. C.J. Riefenhauser worked 1.1 innings with two walks. Lueke (S, 2) pitched 1.1 innings with two hits and one unearned run.

At the plate for the G-Braves, Tyler Pastornicky was 3-for-5, Terdoslavich was 2-for-5 with a run, Cunningham was 2-for-4 with two runs and Boggs was 1-for-5 to extend his hitting streak to eight games.

For Durham Christian and Mahtook were each 2-for-4 and Nix was 2-for-3.

The Gwinnett Braves return to Coolray Field for a six-game homestand beginning on Friday, July 4. The first game of a two-game series against the Durham Bulls begins at 7:05 PM. Right-hander Aaron Northcraft (0-1, 12.46) will start for Gwinnett, while Durham will counter with left-hander Mike Montgomery (8-1, 3.28). Tony Schiavone will have the play-by-play call beginning at 6:50 PM on WDUN.com, GwinnettBraves.com, Tune-In Radio andn the MiLB First Pitch app. The game will also be televised on WSB TV 2.2 MeTV with Van Earl Wright and Dave Lezotte.

Join the Gwinnett Braves for Independence Day on July 4. The G-Braves will be wearing patriotic jerseys that will be auctioned off during the game, with proceeds going to Operation One Voice. Friday is also another “Friday Fireworks” night, as fans are invited to stick around for a post-game fireworks display, presented by Republic Services.
