Couple accused of locking son up turn selves in; denied bond
By The Associated Press
LAWRENCEVILLE - A former Georgia Tech football star and his wife were denied bond Saturday on charges of false imprisonment and cruelty to children after police say they held one of their 10 children prisoner for nearly two years.
The pair turned themselves in at the Gwinnett County Detention Center Friday evening, according to Gwinnett County Police Corporal Jake Smith.
Gwinnett County police said Recardo Wimbush and Therian Wimbush are accused of confining the 13-year-old to a small room with a mattress and makeshift toilet. They face charges of child cruelty and false imprisonment.
Authorities investigated after the Georgia Division of Family and Children Services received an anonymous tip June 15. The boy's parents told authorities their son was locked up for disciplinary reasons.
Police said the teen didn't appear malnourished and he and his siblings showed no signs of physical abuse.
The Georgia Division of Family and Children Services took custody of the boy and his nine siblings.
