Wells Fargo volunteers welcome summer by serving the Gainesville community
GAINESVILLE - Rather than taking it easy Saturday, the first day of summer, dozens of Gainesville area volunteers didn't let the heat stop them from serving their community Saturday.
It was all part of Community Service Super Saturday, where hundreds of red-shirted Wells Fargo team members and friends welcomed summer in Gainesville and 22 other cities across Georgia.
Ideal for June, which is National Homeownership Month, housing for those in need was a big focus. In Gainesville, volunteers put together the framing for a home that will belong to a local family, located at 1166 Desota Drive. Wells Fargo is presenting Habitat for Humanity with $15,000 towards the project.
Volunteers also helped out at Eagle Ranch in Chestnut Mountain, a home for girls and boys in crisis. They planted flowers and did other landscaping projects.
In all, 29 volunteer activities were to take place Saturday across the state. Volunteers were expected to help everyone from seniors to dogs and cats, serving at senior care centers, children’s organizations, food pantries, animal shelters and so much more.
Wells Fargo is donating $120,000 to upgrade the housing situations of 12 families, either by building new homes or repairing existing ones. A majority of this work is being done in partnership with Habitat for Humanity, which will receive $75,000 in all.
“We are determined to make our summer count – the heat can’t keep us away,” said Awale Rage, area president for Wells Fargo. “I can’t think of a better way to spend a Saturday than serving our communities alongside our co-workers and friends.
J.D. Mealor, business banking area manager for Gainesville, said, “We are honored to help in this way and we’re proud to support these non-profits that work hard to make a difference all year long.”
Five events are taking place in Augusta and four in Columbus. In other cities, including Americus, Athens, Dalton, Macon, Rome, Savannah and others, a single event was planned.
