COMMERCE – Racing has always been a bit of a family affair, but Saturday at the Atlanta Dragway in Commerce, GA was proof positive, as the husband and wife team of Jeremy and Ashley Hancock of Commerce were faced in the final round of Super Pro action in the first of two complete Summit ET Series races at the drag strip.

Ashley’s ’00 “Border Line” Undercover dragster left first with a 0.041 second react, and posted a 5.027 second pass at 137.15mph (4.99 dial) on the scoreboard. However, Jeremy’s ’05 Pippin Trucking Undercover dragster did just a little better, with a 0.033 react and a 4.786 at 144.50 mph on a 4.76 target.

This was not the first time Ashley and Jeremy have met in a final round. The couple, who have been together for 13 years and married for seven, have met each other in the Jr Dragster finals before, where Ashley took several wins.

Wes Mayfield (’03 Worthy – Gainesville, GA) ended his day in the semi-final round.

In the Pro final, Tim Polnaszek of Nicholson, GA’s clutch 0.015 second react was the determining factor, as he actually crossed the big end stripe 0.003 seconds behind Woody Bryant's Bowman, GA based '68 Camaro. However, Bryant broke out with a 6.937 at 99.68 mph (6.95 target) taking the stripe. Polnaszek's winning time in his '84 Mustang was 6.772 at 101.00 mph (6.76 dial). Steve Wagner ('69 Dart - Jefferson, GA) and his brother Jeff Wagner ('71 Duster - Braselton, GA) earned the semi-finalist portion of the purse.

Mike Newby has raced in Sportsman at Atlanta Dragway for a long time with his Roswell, GA based '69 Chevelle and scored the win against another long time racer, Russell Haskins of Marietta, GA. The finish line was extremely tight, with Newby taking the nod by 0.007 seconds. Newby went 12.027 at 109.60 mph (12.01 dial), followed closely by Haskin's '13 Mustang, which carded a 12.69 at 109.98 mph (12.67 dial). John Snapp ('14 Mustang - Conyers, GA) was the lone semi-finalist.

Super Pro Bike winner Andrew Patterson from Taylor's, SC normally campaigns in Street ET Bike class. However, he and runner up Jimmy "ChaCha" Heisler, who also competes In Street ET Bike, decided to also enter in Super Pro Bike just to get some extra runs. To their suprise and pleasure, they found themselves racing for first place. Patterson had a good package to begin with, with a 0.014 react and an 8.941 at 151.15 mph (8.89 dial). Heisler actually had him beat, but his '00 Kawasaki chose that moment to quicken the elapsed time, breaking out with a close 10.685 at 121.89 mph (10.69 dial). Billy Orsino ('06 Kawasaki - Winder, GA) and Zach Hulsey ('82 Suzuki - Clermont, GA) made it to the semi-final round.

Patterson wasn't through yet, as he was also a finalist in Street ET Bike. Patterson's Street ET final opponent was Randall Long from Madison, GA. As it turned out, Long made it easy for him when his '06 Suzuki left the starting line too quickly, leaving the dreaded cherry colored bulb glowing (-0.037 red light). Patterson turned in another 8.94 pass, this time at 155.31 mph (8.89 dial). Long chose to lift, and coasted to a 17.13 at 48.86mph (9.50 dial). Jimmy "ChaCha" Heisler ('00 Kawasaki - Woodstock, GA), along with Tim Houghland ('12 Hayabusa - Lawrenceville, GA) ended the day in the semi-final round.

Up next was the second round of Summit ET Series racing for the day.

Walhalla, SC racer Tim Gibson ended a long winless drought in Super Pro with a win against the red hot Jeremy Hancock, who up to that point hadn't lost a round all day. Gibson's Maddox Race Cars '84 Daytona won with a 0.004 react, coupled to a 6.104 at 114.30 mph (6.07 dial). Hancock's react was also very good at 0.019, but his 4.731 at 146.89 mph (4.71 dial) in his '05 Undercover dragster put him 0.002 seconds behind Gibson at the top end stripe. Daulton Rogers ('00 Undercover - Hiwassee, GA) and Lloyd Kaylor ('87 Regal - Winder, GA) earned the semi-finalist portion of the purse.

Dickey Forrester, who has been drag racing for over 40 years, added another entry to his win column with the Pro win. Seeing he had a good lead near the finish line, Forrester lifted off the throttle a little early in his '68 Camaro, sealing the win with a 7.93 at 80.03 mph (7.87 dial). The other finalist was Howard Warren ('72 Maverick - Douglasville, GA). Warren's machine was closer to the dial but second across the finish line with an 8.429 at 79.85 mph (8.40 dial). Brooke Buchanan ('72 Nova - Six Mile, SC) and Mel Abney ('65 Chevy II - Cumming, GA) brought home the semi-finalist payout.

Sportsman winner Blayke Phillips from Jonesboro, GA paid a visit to Atlanta Dragway along with his father Bryan and brother Brandyn, who raced in Pro. At the end of the day, Phillips found himself facing veteran racer Ed Nalley's '83 Chevy Pickup for the Sportsman final. His '98 Firebird was on target with a 14.22 at 93.69 mph (14.19 dial), and Nalley's machine was a little bit further off the mark, crossing the finish line with a 12.08 at 106.15 mph (12.00 dial). Austin Smith from Baldwin, GA was the sole semi-finalist in his well traveled '70 Nova.

Both the winner and runner-up from Super Pro Bike Race No. 1 decided to enter again for race two. In the final, Jimmy "ChaCha" Heisler and Andrew Patterson once again found themselves facing each other. This time, Heisler changed both the lane and the end result by taking the win light with his Woodstock, GA based '00 Kawasaki. Patterson had the better reaction time (0.004 vs 0.031), but in the end Heisler carded a 10.79 at 121.25 mph (10.76 dial) and Patterson's '06 Suzuki was a little off pace with a 9.00 at 145.93 mph (8.90 dial). Adam Edwards from Winder, GA was the semi-final finisher.

Dave Hamilton from Braselton, GA won his first ever event aboard his '06 Suzuki in Street ET Bike. Hamilton met Randy Barnett in the final, and took the win with an 11.06 at 121.90 mph (11.00 dial). Barnett was a little later in the reaction time department, and broke out with a 9.16 at 141.18 mph on a 9.18 dial. Randall Long ('06 Suzuki - Madison, GA) was the semi-finalist.
