3 civil rights icons unite Atlanta social change panel
By The Associated Press
ATLANTA (AP) - Three civil rights icons Rep. John Lewis, former United Nations Ambassador Andrew Young and the Rev. C.T. Vivian are urging the next generation to fight for their brand of social change.
The three were together for a panel Monday at the ``Service Unites'' national conference on volunteering and service. They were joined by Bernice King, the daughter of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who called it a ``triple icon moment.''
Young noted that when they all joined the civil rights movement, ``none of us knew anything'' but had a burning desire to help others.
Lewis told the large crowd they have a responsibility to intervene if they see something unfair or unjust. Meanwhile Vivian reminded the crowd, ``You don't have to go along because somebody else goes along.''
