GAINESVILLE - The Humane Society of Northeast Georgia board appointed a familiar face as Acting Director over the weekend, and performed the shelter's 50,000th neuter surgery.
The board appointed Julie Edwards as acting director after they chose not to renew the previous Executive Director's contract.
"I'm very honored that the board trusted me with that role in the interim," said Edwards. "I've been here four and a half years and it's definitely a passion of mine to see this humane society grow and thrive ."
Edwards and a pet from the shelter are featured weekly on WDUN Pet of the Week.
The shelter's 50,000th neuter surgery was conducted Monday.
The lucky dog is a pit bull mix named Crixus. He and his owners are featured in the photograph.
"It's an integral part of our mission to help reduce pet over-population and also ensure the health and well-being of the pets in our area," Edwards said.
Edwards also said pet over-population was an issue in our area.
