LAWRENCEVILLE -– The Gwinnett Braves (32-30) scored three runs in the first two innings and held off the Rochester Red Wings (36-27) late to win 4-2 on Sunday afternoon at Coolray Field.

Atlanta Braves’ right-hander Jordan Walden made the start for the G-Braves, hurling 1.0 innings, allowing one walk and striking out two. He threw 19 pitches, 12 for strikes in his second rehab appearance with Gwinnett.

“I felt good out there, hamstring felt good. I didn’t have any issues with it again, so that was a positive,” said Walden. “I walked the first guy and I wasn’t very happy with that. I didn’t feel like the command was there, but I battled through and got a couple strikeouts.”

After Walden pitched a scoreless first inning, Gwinnett jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the frame against left-hander Logan Darnell. Tyler Pastornicky singled with two outs, stole second and scored on an RBI double by Christian Bethancourt.

The G-Braves extended the lead in the bottom of the second inning, scoring two runs on three hits. Brandon Boggs singled with one out and scored on a two-out double by Steve Lerud. The catcher would come around to score on an RBI double by Phil Gosselin making it 3-0.

Rochester cut the lead to one run in the top of the third inning against reliever Zach Stewart. Three straight singles by the Red Wings plated their first run of the contest, as Eric Farris drove in Chris Rahl with a single. Dan Rohlfing later scored on a passed ball, making it 3-2.

Despite the two-run third inning, Stewart (W, 4-3) was strong in relief. He tossed 5.2 innings, allowing two runs on six hits for his fourth win of the season.

Gwinnett added a critical insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning against Darnell. Joe Leonard tripled to start the inning and scored on a one-out double by Ozzie Martinez, making it 4-2.

G-Braves’ reliever Ian Thomas (S, 1) made the lead stand, earning his first save of the year with 2.1 scoreless innings.

Darnell (L, 1-4) allowed four runs on eight hits over 5.1 innings for Rochester. Reliever A.J. Achter followed with 2.2 scoreless innings and three strikeouts.

Bethancourt paced the G-Braves, going 2-for-4 with an RBI double to extend his hitting streak to seven games. Gosselin, Lerud and Martinez also added RBI doubles.

Rohlfing led the way for the Red Wings, going 2-for-3 with a run scored.

The Gwinnett Braves and the Rochester Red Wings play game three of the four-game series on Monday night at Coolray Field. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 PM. Right-hander Cody Martin (3-5, 3.82) is scheduled to start for the G-Braves, while the Red Wings will counter with left-hander Kris Johnson (6-2, 2.44).
