GAINESVILLE – A Gainesville cadet has been awarded the Daughters of the American Revolution Outstanding Cadet Medal, and is the first Civil Air Patrol cadet nationally to be awarded the medal.
C/SMSGT Austin Auger of the Civil Air Patrol in Gainesville was awarded the medal in May. Connie Tucker, with the Col. William Candler Chapter of the DAR, awarded the medal to Auger for his work with Wreaths Across America at Alta Vista Cemetery in December of 2013.
The DAR Outstanding Cadet Medal is a new medal that was presented for the first time in January 2014. The medal is awarded to a student for participation in a non-ROTC, military affiliated cadet program funded by a school or private organization, such as the Civil Air Patrol. The medal is to recognize a cadet that has distinguished him- or herself through outstanding leadership, honor, service courage and patriotism.
The recipient is recommended by the commander of the unit to the local DAR chapter. Auger is the first Civil Air Patrol cadet nationally to win the award.
