GAINESVILLE – About 25 people turned out for a town hall meeting hosted by Hall County District 3 Commissioner Scott Gibbs.

Multiple agencies were at the North Hall Park and Community Center to answer questions, including Sheriff Gerald Couch with the Hall County Sheriff’s Office and Financial Services Director Vickie Neikirk.

Neikirk began the program with a slide show detailing the proposed budget for fiscal year 2015. The proposed budget for 2015 is $91.9 million, a 3.42% increase from 2014’s amended budget.

Several citizens took advantage of the question-and-answer portion of the meeting. As expected, a question about the tax assessment of lake properties arose. The citizen shared his concerns about the lake property tax assessments.

“I don’t mind having my property updated to what’s fair, but I would suggest that you make a motion on the commission to lay these figures aside and use the 2014 figures until you’re able to update the county the same way.”

Gibbs said doing that wouldn't make much of an impact.

“If I rolled millage back to 2014, it’s not going to help you if your taxes went up 75 percent.”

Other citizens asked about the tax assessment appeals process and general budget questions.
