DA asks GBI to investigate Habersham drug raid
By Staff and Associated Press reports
CLEVELAND - Georgia Bureau of Investigation officials Tuesday afternoon said they were called to investigate a drug raid in Habersham County where a 19-month-old boy suffered serious burns.
According to Sherry Lang with the GBI, agents in the Cleveland office met with Mountain Judicial Circuit District Attorney Brian Rickman. Rickman requested the agency investigate the May 28 incident where Bounkham Phonesavanh was injured during the execution of a search warrant at 182 Lakeview Heights, Cornelia.
The request, according to the GBI, was to determine if the child's injuries were the result of a criminal act.
The boy was hurt when authorities used a flash grenade while executing a no-knock search warrant at the home where the 19-month-old was staying.
Habersham County Sheriff Joey Terrell has said officers were searching for a potentially armed drug suspect and didn't know children were inside. He has said officers followed protocol.
