GAINESVILLE – “We got notice Tuesday that we’ve got a million dollars coming to the city,” said Chris Davis, Gainesville’s Housing Program Manager, as he stood before the City Council at Thursday morning’s work session.

“All right!” responded Mayor Danny Dunagan to the great news that Gainesville had been selected by the Georgia Department of Community Affairs for the award.

Gainesville and the City of Atlanta are the only two successful applicants to be chosen for the $1 million allocation.

“That long weekend of paperwork paid off,” Dunagan added, referring to the exhaustive application process. “I think you’re going to see a lot in the next twelve months in this city as far as housing goes.”

Councilman George Wangemann asked Davis about the intended use of the funding.

“This program is slightly different,” Davis explained, comparing it to Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding currently in use in the city. “These (funds) can be used to construct single family homes.”

CDBG funds are used for renovations and repairs to existing homes. “I can’t use them (CDBG funds for new construction); we’ll save the CDBG funds for home repairs.”

“Hopefully, we’ll be able to build six or seven homes with this, and as those are sold that comes back to us and we’ll be able to continue (building more homes),” Davis said.

“Those funds revolve; they will stay with us and we can continue to use those. They don’t have to go back to the state. We can continue to use those in the future for similar projects.”

The homes to be built are done so with funding provided by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, and sold to low and moderate income families.

Mayor Dunagan added more good news to that provided by Davis. “Yesterday morning…we traveled down to Atlanta to accept a grant…from the Georgia Highway and Toll Authority…so we can start implementing some of our traffic solutions for our traffic plan that was just completed last year. I think we’re going to do a lot of improvements with that.”
