GAINESVILLE - The Hall County Library Board of Trustees wrote up a SPLOST VII wishlist at yesterday's board meeting.

According to Adrian Mixon, Library Director, they're asking for $2 million for an upgrade to the Gainesville library that serves as the home branch and $1.5 million for new materials, including eBooks, that would be distributed to all branches in the county.

"We had been expecting a change in the stand funding formula, which meant we were going to lose about eight thousand dollars," said Mixon . "And the Georgia House actually asked for that not to take place this year.

"The last thing we really discussed was the SPLOST, and they're putting together some kind of SPLOST package... they're going to have three public hearings next month... the board talked about submitting a request for $2 million to refurbish, remodel and update the downtown library and maybe give us an opportunity to improve on areas where we offer children's services, and also another $1.5 million... to purchase library materials."

Mixon said the materials would cover mostly books but also eBooks for all branches. He also mentioned that the programs aided at the main branch would eventually extend to other branches.

"The Gainesville library is the main library, this is the backbone, the hub... the administration of our network all occurs out of our Gainesville library, and so whatever goes on here kind of benefits the entire county. All our planning, children's services is organized out of Gainesville."

Mixon said the library's main source of income was from the county, and while they hadn't received their numbers yet, they had some requests: they've asked to take the staff off of furlough days and for some funds to update their delivery van.

The SPLOST meetings are set for June 10, 17 and 19. A previous story about the funding is linked below.
