CLEVELAND - Fire officials say no one was injured in an apartment fire Thursday afternoon in the city of Cleveland.

Fire Chief Ricky Pruitt said they received a report of smoke in the area of Bryant Street on the south side of town. He said when the first unit arrived they observed heavy smoke and flames coming from the building.

Pruitt said, the fire was in a second floor unit where a couple of rooms were heavily damaged, plus he said apartments next door and below received heat, smoke and water damage.

Pruitt said, no one was in the apartment unit that caught fire, he said “we did two primary searches and the building was cleared, there was no one inside.“ There were people in the apartment below where the fire occurred and the occupants were able to evacuate safely.

According to Chief Pruitt the cause of the blaze is unknown and investigation by fire investigator Brian Smith.

Bryant Street was shut down to traffic for over an hour while firefighters battled the blaze.
