New program at LTC now accepting students
Lanier Technical College Physical Therapist Assistant Program Director Patty Stancil (Standing) is awaiting her first PTA student class in Fall of 2014.
OAKWOOD - The Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE) recently voted to approve Lanier Technical College’s Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) AAS degree program as a candidate for accreditation. And, the school is now accepting students for this fall.
These students will make up the first graduating class in spring 2016. The program will be offered at LTC’s Forsyth Campus in Cumming.
The director of the new program, Dr. Patty Stancil, says “CAPTE accreditation is absolutely essential for success in the field. This vote is great news that validates a lot of hard work that went into getting the program to this point. The program will continue to comply with all CAPTE standards in anticipation of full accreditation by the time our first class of students graduate.”
The job outlook for those graduates is bright, according to the federal government. Employment of physical therapist assistants is expected to increase 46 percent from 2010 to 2020, much faster than the average for all occupations, and the median annual wage of physical therapist assistants in the north Georgia non-metropolitan is $57,770 per year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Jessica Harmon, Manager of Rehabilitation Services at Northside Hospital, believes the program fills a real need for the area: “PTAs are in high demand, and the new Lanier Tech PTA lab does a great job of replicating the environment graduates will work in.” Lanier Tech recently furnished a fully equipped lab for the PTA students. With modern classrooms, a state-of-the art lab, and clinical experiences across a range of facilities, graduates of the two-year program will receive a first-rate education in one of the nation’s most in-demand fields.
Admission to the 18-seat program is highly competitive, and prospective students are encouraged to attend an informational session as soon as possible. The next scheduled session is June 17, at 6:30 pm, on the Lanier Tech Forsyth Campus, with upcoming sessions on the third Tuesday of each month.
