Traveling Vietnam War monument coming to Ellijay Memorial Day week

Memorial Day week can be observed in Gilmer County this year by seeing firsthand how many American lives were lost during the Vietnam War.
The AVTT Traveling Vietnam Wall, a near-full scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C., will be on display for public viewing in Ellijay beginning Thursday, May 22.
“The wall will be coming in from Murray County the 21st and it will be escorted over here,” said Sandy Lyons, chairman of the local Veterans Memorial Bridge and Garden.
A traveling monument The 360-foot long monument will be assembled and raised on the fenced in Ellijay Lions Club Fairgrounds.
It will stay up for public viewing during set hours until Memorial Day Monday, May 26.
“It will be open at 9 o’clock every morning until 6 o'clock every night," Lyons added. "There will be memorial services every morning and evening."
The wall, which stands at 80% of the real monument's height, will be included with monuments to other wars and veterans.
