GAINESVILLE - The Gainesville-Hall Metropolitan Planning Organization (GHMPO) Policy Committee will consider adding the mayor of Braselton as a voting member when it meets May 13.

"Per the 2010 Census, the Census Bureau has determined that the Gainesville urbanized area has expanded into the Braselton area in Jackson County," Sam I. Baker, Senior Transportation Planner for the GHMPO explained Thursday. "As a result of this expansion, the planning boundary of the Gainesville-Hall Metropolitan Planning Organization has been expanded, incorporating the Town of Braselton. There will be a new voting member on the Policy Committee from the newly incorporated area in Jackson County."

Also on the agenda is a review of changes to the Hall County Road Network.

"Following each Census, the Federal Highway Administration, through the state departments of transportation, (reviews) the functional classification of roads throughout the country to assess whether such classifications need to be changed based on how they presently operate," Baker said.

He added that in Georgia, the state Department of Transportation is working with local governments to review and make changes to road classifications.

"We are presently reviewing our roads and will provide our recommendations for any changes to GDOT by August 2014 which will then forward them to FHWA (the Federal Highway Administration). This is important to local governments because federal funding of roads is often tied to their road classification. The agenda provides a map from GDOT proposing three changes in Hall County for our consideration."
