CLARKESVILLE - Two firefighters were taken by ambulance after being injured battling a fire in an upstairs apartment in the Amy's Creek community west of Clarkesville Monday night.

Habersham County Fire Chief Jeff Cain said the two, who were part of a three-member firefighting team, suffered apparent burns to their legs.

"What we had originally came in as a woods fire with exposure to an apartment garage," Cain said. "We got on scene and did have fire in the apartment over what appears to be a two-car garage."

Firefighters made an interior attack from the side of the structure, he said.

"We did have heavy fire in the middle and front bedroom of the [apartment]," Cain said. "After the initial knockdown and the initial search, we actually had two firefighters - a group of three firefighters, but two of them fell through the upstairs floor into the crawlspace, which is the back side of the carport."

Those firefighters were taken by ambulance to Habersham Medical Center Emergency Department with burns to the front and back of their knees, Cain said.

"They're well," Cain said. "We just get them checked out as precautionary."

Names of the firefighters involved and their respective departments was not initially released.

Cain said no cause of the fire has been determined yet, and firefighters from several stations and departments remain on the scene, located just off Georgia Highway 17 near Medicine Bow Lane.

"The extent of the damage right now is going to be pretty severe for the apartment over the garage," Cain said about 8:20 p.m. "We're still actually in overhaul mode right now."

The American Red Cross was called to assist the resident with immediate needs.

Personnel from several Habersham County stations, Clarkesville Fire Department, Demorest Fire Department, Lee Arrendale State Prison Fire Department and Habersham Emergency Medical Services responded.

Traffic on Highway 17 is down to one lane, and is being directed by firefighters on scene.
