Kitchen fire leads to evacuation of Martin Elementary
FLOWERY BRANCH - All students and staff are safe, but Martin Elementary Technology Academy of Math and Sciences was evacuated because of a fire in the school kitchen Monday morning.
Hall County School System Spokesman Gordon Higgins said the fire was reported around 9:20 a.m.
Everyone was allowed to go back into the building at 10:05 a.m., according to Higgins, although the kitchen and the cafeteria were not usable because of smoke.
"The contingency plan for lunch today - they're working with the Central Office food services department - is to provide sack lunches to serve students in their classrooms," said Higgins.
He said the cause of the fire appeared to be an electrical short in an oven. Hall County Fire Department personnel were investigating.
The school district is still doing an assessment of the damage caused by the oven fire. At this point, it seems primarily to be the cost of replacement of the fire damaged oven, which is estimated to be between $15,000.00--$20,000.
No one was injured during the incident.
