G-Braves win fourth straight game with second shutout in last three outings
By Staff reports
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -– Five pitchers combined on a five hit shutout, leading the Gwinnett Braves (8-6) to a 1-0 win over the Charlotte Knights (6-9) on Thursday night at BB&T Ballpark. The G-Braves have won four straight games, including the first two of the three-game series in Charlotte, NC.
The only tally of the game came in the top of the fourth when leadoff batter Todd Cunningham doubled to left, moved to third on a bunt by Phil Gosselin and scored when Tommy La Stella lifted a fly ball to center. The throw from Charlotte center fielder Gorkys Hernandez seemed to arrive ahead of Cunningham who had tagged from third, but catcher Josh Phegley dropped the ball. Cunningham was ruled safe and Phegley was charged with an error.
Meanwhile, the Gwinnett pitching staff was having one of its best nights of the young season with a second shutout win over the past three games.
Yunesky Maya started the game for Gwinnett, but an apparent leg injury forced him to leave with one out in the bottom of the second. He finished the game with 1.0 inning pitched and two hits. Mitch Atkins (W, 1-2) relieved Maya in the second and got the win by going 4.2 innings with two hits and three strikeouts. Atahualpa Severino (H, 2) worked 1.1 scoreless innings with one hit and two strikeouts. Wirfin Obispo (H, 3) pitched a scoreless eighth and Juan Jamie (S, 3) struck out two in a scoreless ninth. Jaime is now 3-for-3 in save opportunities with Gwinnett.
For Charlotte, Charlie Leesman (L, 0-2) worked 7.0 innings in the loss. He gave up one unearned run on four hits, walked two and struck out four. Ryan Kussmaul worked 2.0 scoreless innings out of the Knights’ bullpen with one hit, two walks and three strikeouts.
Cunningham led the G-Braves with a 3-for-4 night and scored the only run of the game. Ernesto Mejia went 1-for-4 and Tyler Greene was 1-for-3.
Blake Tekotte and Tyler Saladino each went 1-for-3 for Charlotte.
The G-Braves and Knights play the finale of the three-game series in Charlotte on Friday night, first pitch scheduled for 7:05 PM. Atlanta Braves’ left-hander Mike Minor (1-0, 3.86) will make his fourth minor league rehab appearance of the season, his second outing with Gwinnett. The Knights will counter with right-hander Scott Carroll (3-0, 0.00). Tony Schiavone will have the play-by-play call beginning at 6:50 p.m. on wdun.com, GwinnettBraves.com, TuneIn Radio and the MiLB First Pitch App.
