Mellichamp concert to feature French compositions
DEMOREST - Dr. James Mellichamp will present an organ concert with “French Flourishes” at 4 p.m., Sunday, April 27, in the Piedmont College Chapel in Demorest.
The concert will feature works by French composers and French-educated composers from the 18th to the 20th century. Selections include works by Charles Tournemire, Phillip James, César Franck, Louis Vierne, Charles-Marie Widor, Joseph Bonnett, and Marcel Lanquetuit.
Dr. Mellichamp is president and a professor of music at Piedmont, and will perform on the college’s Sewell Pipe Organ, constructed in 2002 by Casavant Freres of Ste. Hyacinthe, Quebec. The organ features some 3,691 pipes and was designed by Mellichamp and Casavant to emulate a variety of organ styles, including French, English, and German.
After study with Harald Rohlig at Huntingdon College, Montgomery, Ala., Dr. Mellichamp was an international organ scholarship recipient at the Hochschule fuer Musik, Herford, Germany. He completed a Diploma while studying organ with Arno Schoenstedt. He holds a Doctor of Music degree from the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University, where he was a student of the legendary Wilma Jensen.
