UNG softball collects 40th victory with sweep at Georgia Southwestern
By Staff reports
AMERICUS -– The eighth-ranked University of North Georgia softball team extended its winning streak to 15 games with a pair of victories at Georgia Southwestern State on Sunday afternoon. The Nighthawks posted a 5-1 win in the opener before capping the Peach Belt Conference regular season with a 5-0 win in the nightcap.
North Georgia (40-8, 20-2) will now wrap up the regular season with a non-conference twin bill against 7th-ranked Alabama-Huntsville on April 16 at 5:00. The game will be the team's Senior Day.
In the opener with the Hurricanes, North Georgia used a four-run second inning to take command. With the bases loaded, Courtney Poole solicited a walk before Taylor Anne Merritt was hit by a pitch to give the duo a pair of RBI's. Jessica Finch's two-RBI single rounded out the frame's scoring.
After GSW added a run in the bottom of the inning, UNG used an RBI-double by Victoria Prince to plate Meagan May to give the Nighthawks a 5-1 lead.
The offensive support would be all Poole would need as she did not allow a Hurricane hit for the remainder of the contest. The right-hander improved to 19-7 on the year after the two-hitter in which she struck out four.
Merritt, Prince and Kim McMillan each tallied two hits apiece.
In the nightcap, Victoria Sink collected her 21st win with her ninth shutout of the year. She allowed just four hits.
The loss drops GSW to an even 26-26 overall and 9-13 in the PBC.
The Nighthawk offense scored two runs in the second and fourth innings to provide more than enough offense for Sink. Meredith Heyer belted her second homerun of the year in the second inning and was responsible for batting in three of the Nighthawks' five runs.
