ATLANTA (AP) - A candidate for Georgia's open U.S. Senate seat has apologized for suggesting that his opponent's lack of a college degree makes her less qualified for the position.

Officials from the Karen Handel campaign said in a statement Thursday that Handel accepts the apology from opponent, David Perdue. However, Handel's campaign says Perdue owes an apology to other Georgians who may have been offended by his statement.

Officials from Perdue's campaign say he made a heartfelt, personal phone call to Handel that was meant to remain private. The Perdue campaign says his comment wasn't meant to offend Handel or anyone.

Perdue and Handel are among 7 Republicans vying for a Senate seat that will be vacant when Republican U.S. Sen. Saxby Chambliss retires. The Republican primary is May 20.
