GAINESVILLE - The Riverside Military Academy Band and Chorus has accepted an invitation to represent Georgia in the Pearl Harbor Memorial Parade in Waikiki, Hawaii on December 7. And, the band and chorus are planning a 5K, Fun Run fundraiser later this month to help finance the trip.

Riverside’s Band and Chorus received the official invitation last summer from the Chairman of the Selection Committee for the Pearl Harbor Parade and public ceremony. The first nominations are given to units from the eight states that have battleships named after them in Pearl Harbor. The committee then nominates units from the other 19 states that have battleships named after them elsewhere. There are four unit-at-large invitations extended to bands from remaining states that do not have a battleship representing their state, and Riverside was nominated by a member from the Southeast region.

“We are very excited and honored to represent Gainesville, Hall County, and the State of Georgia in the 2014 Pearl Harbor Memorial Parade in Hawaii. The Riverside Military Academy Band and Chorus have already begun preparations for our performances in the Pearl Harbor Memorial Parade as well as at the USS Arizona Memorial. This is a once-in-a–lifetime opportunity for our cadets. We are committed to representing our community and our state with a quality performance in honor of those Americans we lost at Pearl Harbor,” states RMA Band Director Katy Wilson.

The RMA Marching Band and Color Guard Unit will march in the Pearl Harbor Memorial Parade beginning at Fort DeRussey in Waikiki on December 7. On December 8, both the RMA Band and the RMA Men’s Chorus will perform a tribute concert at the USS Arizona Memorial.

Riverside will hold a 5K race, the Hula Hustle 5K & Fun Run, on April 19 at 9 a.m. with proceeds to benefit the RMA Band and Chorus travel expenses.

“Are you curious what life is like around the castle walls of Riverside? There are many 5Ks that have been hosted near Riverside’s campus. However, the Hula Hustle 5k is unique! On this race route, runners and walkers will be able to see parts of campus that are typically closed off to the public. Come experience Riverside like you never have before,” says Wilson.

Runners are encouraged to dress up in their best tropical shirts and hula skirts with prizes awarded to the best costumes. Medals will be awarded to race winners by age group. Race participants are also invited to the post-race luau with live music from local band “Steel Dreamin'.” Register online now at
