TOCCOA - A wanted man is behind bars in Stephens County, after being shot at by a woman who felt threatened by him Tuesday afternoon.

Stephens County Sheriff Randy Shirley said the man fled from a Georgia Department of Natural Resources ranger in the Yonah Dam area Monday afternoon.

Deputies saturated the area, but were unable to locate the man at that time.

On Tuesday, the man fled on foot from deputies in the Eastanollee/Avalon area of Stephens County.

"We were looking for a suspect wanted by Franklin County who ran on foot from one of my deputies," Shirley said. "We called for bloodhounds."

Things escalated when the man approached a woman Tuesday afternoon.

"The suspect broke into a shop, and as we closed in he was approaching a female in her yard in a fast manner," Shirley said. "The suspect got more than he bargained for. The female felt threatened as he got very close to her and she pulled her handgun and shot off one round near him."

The man fled away from her. Deputies, with the help of a bloodhound, tracked and apprehended the wanted felon, Shirley said.

Shirley said charges are pending on the man, including more serious felonies in Stephens County. He is being held at the Stephens County Jail.

"Good job to the brave female who was on her property minding her business," Shirley said.

No one was hurt during the course of the pursuits and apprehension, he said.

Additional details about the man and the charges he faces will be released Wednesday.
