Red Wings Edge G-Braves, 2-1
By staff reports
ROCHESTER, NY – The Rochester Red Wings (31-14) scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth inning against Gus Schlosser and hung on to beat the Gwinnett Braves (29-26) by a 2-1 score on Sunday afternoon at Frontier Field.
Gwinnett’s struggles at the plate continued in the contest, as the club has scored just two runs on 15 hits over three straight losses to the Red Wings.
The G-Braves scored first on Sunday, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning. Steve Lerud led off with a triple off Rochester starter Yohan Pino. Ozzie Martinez then grounded out to second, pushing Lerud across for Gwinnett’s first lead of the series.
That lead lasted until the bottom of the fifth. Eric Farris was hit by a pitch from Schlosser and moved to third on James Beresford’s double to right. The next batter, Chris Colabello, hit a ground ball to third baseman Edward Salcedo. Salcedo threw home to get Farris who was heading to the plate, but Lerud dropped the ball allowing him to score. Beresford moved to third on the play and scored as Brad Nelson hit into a force play at short.
Rochester’s 2-1 lead held the rest of the way as the G-Braves collected only two more hits. Todd Cunningham and Mark Hamilton each singled in the ninth inning, but Ryan Pressly induced Joey Terdoslavich into a game-ending groundout.
Schlosser (L, 3-2) worked 6.0 innings with five hits and two unearned runs. He walked two and struck out a season high eight batters. Ian Thomas, in his first game back since being optioned by Atlanta, went 2.0 scoreless innings with one hit and three strikeouts.
Pino (W, 7-1) pitched 7.1 innings with three hits, one earned run, one walk and four strikeouts. Aaron Thompson (H, 3) and Pressly (S, 2) combined to work 1.2 scoreless innings.
Hamilton paced the G-Braves at the plate, going 2-for-4. Lerud went 1-for-2 with a triple.
For Rochester, Beresford was 2-for-3 with a run scored, while Farris was 1-for-3 with a run scored.
