CARY, N.C. -- The Gainesville baseball team came within two runs of reaching the National High School Invitational semifinals on Thursday, falling to Clovis (Calif.) 1-0 in a quarterfinal battle.

Gainesville was scheduled to face Dyer County (Tenn.) in a consolation bracket game on Thursday night but results were not available at publication time.

The tournament schedule was moved up a day due to impending inclement weather.

The Red Elephants had defeated No. 2-nationally ranked Venice (Fla.) 6-3 in order to face Clovis.

Gainesville will take on Orange Lutheran (Calif.) in another consolation game at 3:30 p.m. Friday.
