Young girl dies in Forsyth Co. crash
CUMMING - A Forsyth County teen has died from injuries suffered in a two-vehicle wreck Saturday afternoon just north of Cumming.
According to the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office, 13-year-old Kayla Pirkle passed away at Children’s Hospital of Atlanta at Scottish Rite late Saturday afternoon, just hours after she was involved in the collision.
Deputy First Class Andrew Ives with the F.C.S.O.’s Traffic Specialist Unit said the accident occurred at the intersection of Martin Road and Shadburn Road at approximately 1:20 p.m., and involved a 2008 Ford F-250 and 1998 Acura TL.
Ives said the Ford pickup truck, which at the time was being driven by Cumming resident Jason Kenney, was traveling west on Martin Road, while the Acura, piloted by 19-year-old Kori Pirkle, also of Cumming, was heading eastbound on the same road.
As both vehicles neared the intersection of Martin and Shadburn Roads, Pirkle attempted to make a left-hand turn onto Shadburn; the vehicles then collided, with the impact occurring on the Acura’s passenger side, where the younger Pirkle was sitting.
Karleen Chalker, spokeswoman for the Sheriff’s Office, said the teen was airlifted to the hospital but was unable to overcome her injuries. Chalker added than the elder girl, said to be the victim’s older sister, was taken to North Fulton Hospital with minor injuries, but she was treated and released in short order.
Kenney, along with two passengers who were also in the Ford at the time of the crash, did not suffer any injuries in the incident, according to Ives.
The wreck is currently being investigated by the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office Crash Investigations Unit.
