Ga. immigrant communities to rally for deportation relief
President Obama speaks at the White House in June 2012, addressing immigration policy for undocumented immigrants.
ATLANTA - Georgia immigrant communities plan to rally April 5 in Atlanta, calling for deportation relief from President Obama. A number of North Georgia groups will participate.
Organizers say with the Obama administration approaching nearly two million deportations, the groups will urge White House action while sending the message "Not One More."
The rally begins at 10:00 at the State Capitol and will proceed to the Atlanta office of U.S. Immigration, Customs Enforcement (ICE) at Spring and Garnett streets in downtown Atlanta.
Groups expected to participate include but are not limited to: ACLU-Georgia, North Ga. Unitarian Universalist Social Action Cluster, Athens Immigrant Rights Coalition, Dignidad Inmigrante (Athens), Cobb Immigrant Alliance, Georgia AFL-CIO, GALEO, LUCC, North Georgia Immigrant Justice, and Freedom University-Georgia.
As part of the National #Not1more Deportation campaign, the organizations hope to expose "the human cost and cruelty of the deportation machine and highlight the suffering President Obama could stop today."
The protest is prompted by the record deportations under the Obama administration which are anticipated to hit the milestone of two million removals since he took office. It will emphasize that immigrant families canít wait for relief and that the President doesnít have to wait for Congress to use his executive authority to stop "the suffering." Organizers say he could expand the deferred action program he created for immigrant youth and suspend deportations immediately.
Similar rallies are planned the same day across the country.
