GAINESVILLE - Gainesville Public Works Department officials late Wednesday morning were surveying damage just off the city square following a sewer main collapse.

City spokeswoman Catiel Felts said the collapse resulted in a sinkhole at the corner of Washington and Bradford streets.

"We have closed Bradford from Washington to West Academy, and one lane of Washington Street is closed, so anyone who is entering the square, please use extreme caution," Felts said.

"You can not turn right on Bradford off of Washington Street as you enter the square," Felts added.

At 11:00 a.m., city crews were still assessing damage and developing a plan of action.

"We do know that the utility there is over 100 years old. We haven't determined the cause yet," Felts added.

She said workers decided to begin the repair Wednesday evening. Detour signs will be posted and a portion of Bradford will remain closed Wednesday night, according to Felts.

She said customers will still be able to access restaurants on Bradford.
