Piedmont softball stretches its winning streak to 14
By staff reports
DEMOREST -- The Piedmont College softball team pushed its winning streak to now an incredible 14 by taking a pair of decisions earlier today at Walker Athletic Complex in the first day of the Lady Lion Round Robin Classic. Piedmont first rolled to a 9-0 win decided in just five innings over Salem College before needing more walkoff magic against Truett-McConnell College to come away with a 2-1 win in eight innings to cap off the day.
Piedmont started off slow against Salem in the opener holding just a 1-0 lead after three innings of play as Olivia Duncan took home courtesy of a Spirits error in the bottom of the first.
However, despite the sluggish start, Piedmont opened up the offense in the bottom of the 4th scoring eight runs to force an early ending with a 9-0 lead after five.
Yesterday's hero Laura Carter started the scoring spree with an RBI triple before scoring herself on PC's next at-bat as Jessica Perschka singled in her teammate from third. Duncan would pick up an RBI as well after scoring a run back in the Piedmont first while Abby Atkinson and Abby Smith would also get a run each driven in.
The Lady Lions batted around in the productive 4th allowing Carter to have another chance which she took advantage of with a two-out, two-RBI double as PC poured it on in the middle inning explosion at the plate.
Sophomore Jordin Ellingson got it done in the circle to get her 12th win of 2014 moving her record to 12-1 overall as she allowed four hits in five innings of work shutting out the opposition. Ellingson stuck out seven without issuing a single walk as she has now fanned at least seven in three of her last four games on the mound.
In game two, a single game affair against Treutt-McConnell, it was the senior Brittney Head who got it done with her arm to pick up her 6th win on the season as she tossed eight innings without allowing an earned run as the only Truett-McConnell score of the game came on Lady Lion fielding error in the 4th.
That score by the Bears tied up the game at one as PC had taken the lead two innings earlier on a Laura Carter sac fly that brought Abby Smith home. The Lady Lions stayed deadlocked with the Bears through regulation needing an extra frame to decide a winner.
In the top of the 8th, Head induced a rare 643 double play to get her team out of the inning without a deficit and set up a possible winning situation in the bottom of the inning, Piedmont's second game that had gone to eight innings in the last three for PC. Piedmont picked up a 3-2 win over LaGrange in eight, but that winner came in the top of the 8th as the Lady Lions were visiting the Panthers just yesterday.
This time around, the Lady Lions got a chance to end it at the plate in eight as it would take only one at bat as a Spirit error allowed Maryrose Burns to score from second giving PC a 2-1 victory in a dramatic second game of the Friday action at the Round Robin Classic.
Head struck out four and did not issue a single walk on the day as she moves to 6-1 in the circle in her final season wearing the green and gold of PC.
With the pair of wins, Piedmont stretches its current winning streak to 14 games as they are now 18-2 overall and have not lost a game since dropping two to Brenau on February 20th. The Lady Lions have been dominant in that stretch as well with eight of those 14 wins coming by eight runs or more.
