2 of 12 caissons for new Clarks Bridge now finished
GAINESVILLE – Two of the twelve concrete caissons have been poured for the new State Route 284/Clarks Bridge Road bridge over Lake Lanier near the rowing venue.
“The second caisson was drilled to a depth of 105.55 feet to bedrock...the (third) caisson is south of the two existing ones, closest to the existing bridge. This is the largest caisson on the project, six-and-a-half feet diameter. Four of the twelve caissons are this size requiring special cooling tubes to ensure the concrete cures to the needed strength. Once cured the cooling tubes will be removed and the tube voids filled with high strength grout,” explained Harold Mull, Georgia DOT District Construction Engineer.
The new bridge is built at a cost of $8.7 million and work is due for completion by the end of 2015.
