FLOWERY BRANCH - The City of Flowery Branch is planning to 'paint the town' with a historic mural that recalls the days when steam locomotives pulled in to pick up and deliver freight and passengers.

Council members Thursday night got their first look at a proposed 100x 120-foot mural picturing a 19th century locomotive. Community Development Director John McHenry said the art work would appear on a building wall next to the train depot on Main Street.

“We think it’s a great design with the train and it’s got the Flowery Branch logo with the dogwood bloom,” McHenry said. “It would really dress up the areas that we have downtown.”

McHenry said the mural idea is a recommendation from the recently approved redevelopment plan; it would be visible to passing trains and Atlanta Highway motorists.

“This is a historic railroad town and we’ve got 40 Northfolk Southern trains going by every day and Amtrak,” McHenry said. “We want to build off the history.”

Estimated cost to paint the mural is around $6,100, and McHenry said with council approval, artists could paint it beginning this summer. McHenry added the mural would dress up downtown and hopefully attract new businesses.
