ATLANTA (AP) -- Candidates continue to qualify for Georgia's May 20 primaries, including state Sen. Jason Carter who is running for governor as a Democrat and Gainesville attorney Ashley Bell who is running for state schools superintendent as a Republican.

Qualifying continues through Friday for federal, state and local candidates. Carter, the grandson of former President Jimmy Carter, was joined Wednesday by former United Nations Ambassador Andrew Young as he filed his official paperwork.

Earlier, Gov. Nathan Deal qualified for the Republican primary as he seeks re-election this year. One of his GOP challengers, former Dalton Mayor David Pennington, has also qualified.

Bell is a former Hall County Commissioner. As of 4:15 Wednesday afternoon, there were seven other GOP candidates and one Democrat who had qualified for the schools superintendent race. The incumbent, John Barge, is giving up the post to run for governor.

In addition, Democrat David Vogel of Hull has qualified as a Democrat to run for the 9th District Congressional seat now held by Doug Collins of Gainesville, a Republican, who will be seeking re-election.

Meanwhile, U.S. Reps. Paul Broun, Phil Gingrey and Jack Kingston, along with former Secretary of State Karen Handel and former Dollar General CEO David Perdue have all qualified in the Republican primary for Georgia's open U.S. Senate seat. Democrat Michelle Nunn is expected to file her paperwork later this week.
