The coldest temperature of the three-month period in Gainesville was a +5 on Jan. 7.
You probably know its been colder this winter than normal or strongly suspect it, but do you know by just how much? Well, the National Weather Service (NWS) has some answers.

The agency has released data covering the past three months - December, January and February. While winter doesn't officially end until later this month, meteorologists and climatologists use Dec.-Feb. when reporting on the severity of a winter. The period is called the climatological winter.

According to the report, all places in north and central Georgia were "slightly cooler than normal with a significantly cooler January, most notable in minimum temps" and a majority of sites were wetter than normal.

In Gainesville, for instance, temperatures for the three months averaged 1.6 degrees below normal. They were below normal by 6.8 degrees in January and 0.3 degrees in February. December, however, saw readings that were actually above normal, by 2.4 degrees. On 49 of the 90 days in the period, temperatures were below normal in Gainesville.

Precipitation in Gainesville for the three months was 1.07 inches above average.

And, with spring just around the corner, what does the NWS has to say about what we can expect? There's a "33-37% chance for above normal temperatures," according to the projections, and an "equal chance" for above, below, or near normal precipitation.
