Class AA playoffs: Jeffersons playoff run ends at the hands of GAC
By Luke Story Staff
JEFFERSON -- Leave it all on the court...
That was the mantra for the Jefferson Dragons on Thursday against defending Class AA state champ, Greater Atlanta Christian (GAC) -– in a contest that ended the Dragons' playoff run with a 60-47 defeat in the quarterfinal round.
“We knew coming into the game that we were going to have to play our hearts out and make shots,” said Dragon’s coach Bolling DuBose -- and for nearly a half Jefferson did just that.
With the "sixth man" effect of the Jefferson crowd and a lot of hustle the Dragons held GAC to 36 first half points to trail 36-21, while also holding Spartans standout Isiah Wilkins to eight points in the first half –- and 12 for the game.
“Our goal was to push Isiah out of paint and force him to take tough shots,” said DuBose.
The Dragons started the second half with four consecutive turnovers, however, leading to eight GAC points and pushing the Spartans lead to 20-plus. Dragons senior forward Satchel Turpin -- who put up a double-double on the night with 12 points and 13 rebounds -- converted a deep 3-pointer to end the third quarter, but it was part of just seven points during the period for Jefferson, and the Spartans advantage proved too much through the final eight minutes -- as both teams struggled to score early in the final quarter.
Eventually, however, the potent offense of GAC pieced together a 8-0 run late in the fourth, putting the contest out of reach.
The outcome closed out the final contest on Jefferson's aging gymnasium -- a new facility will be ready for next season -- and ended the Dragons' best season since a Class AA semifinal run in 2010.
