Jackson County Chamber leads community delegation to state Capitol

JEFFERSON - The Governmental Affairs Committee of the Jackson County Area Chamber of Commerce assembled a 19-member delegation of county leaders and visited the state Capitol recently to meet with various state officials, including Governor Nathan Deal and Lieutenant Governor Casey Cagle. The group received updates on issues ranging from transportation challenges, economic development initiatives, telecommunications and more.
Meetings also took place with Secretary of State Brian Kemp, and Commissioner of the Department of Transportation Keith Golden. In addition, Representative Tommy Benton, Senator Frank Ginn, and Senator John Wilkerson provided detailed updates on the current legislative session.
"Our objective for this trip was to continue to elevate the profile of Jackson County," said Josh Fenn, the Chamber's President/CEO and Director of Economic Development. "We're putting forth a concerted effort to raise the level of communication and partnership with our representatives in Atlanta, and that is something that is a long term on-going concern."
Included in the delegation were County Commissioners Tom Crow, Jim Hicks and Bruce Yates, as well as County Manager Kevin Poe. The City of Commerce was represented by City Manager Pete Pyrzenski. Newly elected Mayor Roy Plott represented The City of Jefferson, while Councilman Richard Mayberry attended on behalf of the City of Braselton. Other elected officials included Sheriff Janice Mangum and Probate Court Judge Sherry Moore.
Leaders from the business community included Shawn Watson, Legacy Landscape Management and Swirlee’s; Bill Cornell, Precision Planning; Martha Martin, Phil-Mart Transportation; Joe Hicks, Jackson Electric Membership Corp.; Dylan Wilbanks, Wilbanks Law Firm; Howard Ledford, Lanier Technical College – Commerce Campus; Mark Valentine, Tanger Outlets; Lee Chapman, Jackson Electric Membership Corp.; and diAna Kunz-Huckins, Chairman of the Board – Jackson County Chamber of Commerce.
